About the Challenge

The Cowichan Zero Waste Challenge aims to get residents and businesses talking about and taking action to reduce waste, reuse materials and recycle even more than you already do.

We have purposely used the word “challenge” to describe this initiative because:

  1. It’s a lofty goal. We acknowledge that getting rid of 100% of our waste is a very challenging idea, particularly because so many factors are outside of our control (e.g. product design, manufacturing processes). But we also understand that it is the right thing do to, there are lots of factors within our control, and the closer we get the better.
  2. Everyone has a role. There are hundreds of ways that individuals and businesses can work to reduce consumption and waste production – and protect the environment and save money along the way. We challenge you to do a little bit more every day to get us closer to Zero Waste. (Of course there are also lots of things that government can do, which are explained on the “Zero Waste Plan” page.)

In essence, Cowichan’s Zero Waste Challenge asks: “How far can we get today?” Here’s how you can help:

Talk it up

  • We want to hear your stories about how you are making small changes everyday to help your family or business make better use of materials and produce less garbage.
  • Spread the word: help us get everyone in the region on the road to Zero Waste by planning a Zero Waste event in your office or school, or creating a contest with your friends to see who can produce the least amount of waste (and then telling us about it using our feedback page).

Take Action

The challenge of getting to Zero Waste can feel easier if you:
