Curbside recycling – accepted items
Plastic
- Plastics must be clean and have recycling symbol and number showing (between #1 and #7). Note: you cannot recycle Styrofoam at the curbside (but it can be recycled for free at the CVRD’s Recycling Depots).
- Examples include empty milk jugs, yogurt or margarine containers, windshield washer jugs, shampoo or soap bottles, etc.
- Remember to remove all paper or plastic labels!
- Bag your bags! All film plastic (grocery bags, bread bags, cling wrap, sheet plastic etc.) should be placed in one bag and securely tied.
Paper and cardboard
- Must be clean and free from glue, sparkles, plastic, paint or other contaminants.
- Examples include office paper, newsprint, magazines, catalogues, inserts and flyers, telephone directories, file folders, calendars, packing paper, gift wrap (no foil), post-it notes, cereal boxes, detergent boxes, shoe boxes, egg cartons, etc.
- Corrugated cardboard is also accepted, but it must be flattened and folded into sections no larger than 2’ x 3’ (no waxed or soiled cardboard please).
Tin cans
- All clean and flattened tin foil, aluminum pie plates, etc.
- Tin cans and lids are accepted (remember to remove labels).

Free drop-off at Recycling Depots – accepted items
- Used motor oil, oil filters and containers. Up to 20 litres.
- Used antifreeze.
- Passenger / light truck tires. First four units free, $2/unit thereafter.
- Disposable and rechargeable batteries. Charges apply to commercial quantities.
- Vehicle batteries.
- Scrap metal (e.g. appliances, bicycles, BBQ's).
- Clean bulk plastics. Must have code # 1-7 stamped on them and be clean; no #3 PVC pipe or vinyl siding.
- Residential organics. Accepted at Bings Creek only – up to a 5 gallon pail (23 litres) per visit is free; thereafter $3.00 minimum charge for quantities up to 55 lbs.
- Yard and garden materials – includes grass, leaves, and branches no greater than three inches in diameter. No sod, rock or dirt.
- Fluorescent tubes / bulbs. First 11 tubes / bulbs free, $.50 per tube / bulb thereafter.
- Cell phones (handset, batteries and chargers).
- Household recyclables (clean plastic containers, clean plastic film, tin cans, foil, magazines, mixed paper, boxboard, newspaper, cardboard, and glass).
- Propane tanks and canisters (refillable and disposable).
- Refrigerators / freezers, and air conditioners. First unit free, $15/unit thereafter.
- Styrofoam.® Must be clean of all contaminants. No blue or pink sheets of insulation.

All multi-bins accept newspapers and inserts, magazines and glossy fliers, tins cans, and glass. The CVRD has conveniently placed bins (mini-recycling centres) at local businesses around the valley to help you do your part and keep our waste disposal down.
